This vintage is typical of the Penna Lane style. Warm spring and summer temperatures created good ripening conditions for shiraz grapes. The wine was matured for 22 months in a combination of new and older American oak. It may throw a heavy crust as it was bottled unfiltered to preserve the rich, spicy fruit flavours.

VINEYARD

This wine is made from 100 per cent Clare Valley shiraz harvested on 14 March 2006 at an average ripeness of 14.6º Baumé.

PLUSH, PROFOUND, SATISFYING: Penna Lane 2005 Shiraz

This Clare Valley shiraz has lots of smoky, carred barrel characters from the liberal use of oak, then a big, chewy, concentrated palate with layers of flavour and ample smooth tannins. Plush, profound and satisfying, this is a wine with great depth. SEE CLIPPING

OOZES DARK CHOCOLATE: Penna Lane 2005 Shiraz

The shiraz has an inviting purple-crimson colour with pink hues around the edge of the glass. The noseo oozes dark chocolate, spice and blackberry fruit aromas. The palate shows plum, rhubarb and blackcurrant. The tannins are soft and nicely integrated into the wine. The finish is long and fruit-driven and this full-bodied wine has palate length on a dry, firm finish. SEE CLIPPING

ROAD TO SUCCESS: Penna Lane 2005 Shiraz

Our choice is the shiraz with a good cheese platter — its rich black cherry, black olive and prune fruit flavours are well balanced with acidity, soft tannin and a hint of spicy oak. SEE CLIPPING
